In my opinion, both these directors are making movies about the Heidegger Question of the Being. Malick studied philosophy and, between others, Heidegger. In one interview he gave and i have read he expressed the importance of Heidegger.
Lav Diaz, an exceptional movie director, even discusses Heidegger in movies. If Diaz prefers generally black and white and Malick the velvet of the colours, both open the camera to the infinite, this moment where Time and Being just melt and dissolve each other. Malick more cosmic and telluric, Diaz more the breath of the human being in the loneliness and vicinity of the being. And, from another point of view, they remind me the connection and dialogue between Heidegger and René Char. But to explain this it was necessary a lot of days and posts.
At last, they are both the kind of movie directors in one category that i call, "suspend the time". If a movie is a "sculpture of time" (Tarkovski), (and of course the second volume of Deleuze book about cinema speaks also about this) Diaz and Malick they have the capacity of "the suspension of time". Diaz with his long movies- some with eleven hours-, with long takes and the evanescence of dreaming realities and Malick with the evanescence of the space, creating the sensation of suspension.
