Desde o espantoso documentário Gallivant(1996) que a sua obra que, infelizmente, tenho cada vez mais dificuldade em ver em ecrã, a não ser em alguns raros festivais, tem vindo a irromper num caudal criativo e perturbador, lançando reptos radicais sobre a realidade, a existência e algum, pouco e cada vez mais absurdo, sentido para tudo isto. Muitas vezes, feitos a partir de viagens imaginárias, mas com um fundo real, os seus filmes são experiências perturbantes das identidades, do que somos, a começar pela própria identidade british. No caso de By Our Selves, é o poeta John Clare numa viagem pagã pela natureza da sua mente e dos seus sentidos, numa viagem campestre em busca de um amor perdido.
O cinema de Andrew Kötting continua a garantir uma extraordinária linhagem de realizadores independentes e artesanais britânicos, onde sobressaem nomes como Peter Watkins, Derek Jarman ou Patrick Keiller, entre outros.

I am—yet what I am none cares or knows;
My friends forsake me like a memory lost:
I am the self-consumer of my woes—
They rise and vanish in oblivious host,
Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes
